Ashes On Their Wings

by Ben Pickard

No mourning site to rest my head,
Just ashes all around
No bride within my wedding bed,
Nor body over ground

(Where we still live
And don't forgive
All those who make no sound)

No heaven's gates to welcome her -
No angels on a wing
No footfalls on the gorse she stirred;
No place to put her ring -

Deserted halls
And deafened calls
Are all the joy you bring!

The ice was thick, but now is thin -
I skate a wicked sheet
Confessions, all, are deadly sins
And not a half will meet

In white we walked,
In snow we talked,
But now I drown in sleet
